Faculty of Information Engineering

Facultyof Information Engineering originates from Wuhan Calculating Station of the Ministry of Geology. In the year 1985, the Computer Department was established; and then in 1995 and 1996, it merged respectively Cartography Staff Room of Department of Basic Courses, and Wireless Staff Room of Physical Exploration Department, thus forming the present Faculty of Information Engineering. The Faculty now runs 3 undergraduate programs (Computer Software Engineering, Communication Engineering, and Geographic Information System), 3 programs that have been authorized to confer Master’s Degree (Applied Technology of Computer, Communication and Information System, Map Graphics, and Geographic Information Engineering), and 1 doctoral program (Map Graphics and Geographic Information System). GIS Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education and GIS Software Research and Application Engineering Center of Hubei Province are also set up in the institute. Moreover, it owns a whole set of hardware and software facilities of computer network, space information data processing, and the teaching and scientific research of communication engineering. The staff of the Faculty totals about 80. Of them, there are 8 full professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 17 associate professors. There are about 1000 current undergraduate students and 143 graduates (including 15 doctors) pursuing studies here.


Faculty of Information Engineering always sticks to the developing principle of combining teaching, research and production, and it has already achieved a lot in teaching and scientific research. Dean Wu Xincai, who is also a member of CPPCC and a doctoral supervisor, is honored as one of the middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, and as one of the first group of specially-appointed professors of Yangtze River Scholar rewarding plan; he is elected as labor model in Hubei Province as well. He takes the lead of a research group that has successfully worked out the first set of MAPCAD, realizing the complete computerization of the input, compilation and publication of colorized maps. This achievement has completely changed the sophisticated situation of hand-made cartography, which has lasted for thousands of years, and thus originating an important reform in the traditional map publication industry. The geographical cartography of our country has as a result been listed at the top worldwide; the MAPGIS, which has its own unique copyright, has broken the long-existed situation of foreign GIS software taking the lead. Furthermore, in the testing of GIS software hosted by the State Ministry of Science and Technology, MAPGIS remains at the first place for the successive six years, and has been recommended as the first choice of GIS flat roof software. MAPGIS has won the first prize for Scientific Achievement of Hubei Province and the second prize for Scientific Achievement nationally.


Faculty of Mechanical & Electronic Information

Faculty of Mechanical & Electronic Information is a faculty set through the adjustment of dominant branches of learning in the university in order to meet the demand of the socialist modernization construction and nation-wide development of high technology. In recent years, following closely the paces of the developing science and technology, the faculty has continuously been improving and perfecting its settings of disciplines and majors, and dedicating to the cultivation of talents and the research and exploitation of high-tech products. As a result, it has featured itself notably and achieved greatly in teaching and research.


Currently, the staff of the faculty totals about 95, of which there are 2 doctoral supervisors, 9 full professors, and 19 associate professors. The faculty also includes 4 teaching and research sections, 3 teaching experimental centers, 1 research institution and 1 company. 4 undergraduate programs (mechanical design and automation, electronic information engineering, automation and industrial design), 3 programs for Master’s, and 2 engineering fields to cultivate Masters of Engineering are offered. The total number of undergraduates and postgraduates reaches more than 1200.


Faculty of Mechanical & Electronic Information has been running teaching programs for over 40 years and thousands of professional talents have graduated from the faculty. It is featured by great priority to the solid foundation and updating of knowledge, the strengthening of engineering practical training, and the enhancement of innovative consciousness. Great achievements have been resulted in the innovation and research of teaching. The faculty has won two 1st and two 2nd prizes for Excellent Achievement at provincial level, and established successively 2 bases for production, studying and research. These two bases have assumed a series of research subjects on engineering design, manufacturing and installation combining the training of both undergraduates and postgraduates, and resulting in rather favorable social and economic benefits. In order to improve the students’ ability in practical operation and their enthusiasm in all kinds of scientific activities, the faculty also established “Fund of Scientific Activities for College Students” and “College Students’ Academic Research Center”. A great number of students have thus won rewards in scientific competitions such as “National Electronic Design Contest for College Students”, “National Challenge Cup Competition”, and “Provincial Huikai Cup Competition”. At the same time, they also take an active role in activities of inventing and creating, many fruits of which have won national patents.


The faculty attaches great importance to its progress with a stable development as the priority. Thus, it has maintained a positive developing trend. The accomplishments of scientific projects total about 31, those under operating 15;the outlays for scientific research have been increasing year by year with an average of about RMB¥1,213,800; 4 academic monographs have been published and one 1st prize, three 2nd prizes and one 3rd prize have been gained for the faculty.


International academic exchange is also very significant for the faculty. It has established cooperative ties and carried out academic exchange activities respectively with overseas institutions such as Bel Laboratory of U.S.A., Norway University and South-Australian University of Australia.


This young faculty owns a group of persevering and hardworking experts and professors, a team of energetic and surefooted young teachers, and a large number of active and enthusiastic students; it also has high spirits that have been long formed as being “solidary, enterprising, hardheaded and innovational”. All this has laid a substantial foundation for the further development of the faculty.


Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering is one of the largest among the schools and departments in CUG (Wuhan). It was once successively, the Fifth and Seventh Department of the early Beijing College of Geology, the Hydrological Geological Department, the Engineering Geological Department, the Mineral Exploration Department and the Surveying Staff Room of Wuhan College of Geology. In 1998, there were some changes in the schools and departments and the Faculty of Engineering of CUG was thus established. The faculty has developed and expanded. It now includes 2 departments and 3 staff rooms, namely the Civil Engineering Department, the Reconnaissance and Basic Engineering Department, the Mapping Engineering Staff Room, the Security Engineering Staff Room and the  Mechanics Staff Room. Moreover, the faculty also runs 1 state key discipline (Geological Engineering), 2 key disciplines at ministerial or provincial level, 1 post-doctoral working station (Geological Engineering), 2 programs to grant Doctor’s Degrees (Geological Engineering, Underground Architecture, Geotechnical Engineering) 7 master’s programs, and 6 undergraduate programs. There are also 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of State Land and Resources, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Russian Academician and 10 doctoral surpervisors. There are more than 130 staff and there are 1600 current undergraduates and 400 postgraduates.


The staff members are always striving for improvement and making innovations with a pioneering spirit. There has been much progress and achievements have been made in teaching and scientific research. Over the last 50 years, the faculty has already trained over ten thousand professionals of engineering construction. These people are now working in their respective posts. Most of them have already become chief leaders and they hold important positions in some large national projects and constructions. Some have even become leaders of our nation. Sun Jinlong and Shi Kunshan are two important people from this group.


While attaching great importance to daily teaching, the faculty also pays great attention to the improvement of textbooks. Over 300 textbooks of various kinds have already been published. The number of teaching research projects that have been completed has reached 10. Scientific research is a very important index that could reflect the academic level and improve the comprehensive strength of the faculty. Over the last fifty years, about 100 projects of various kinds have been accomplished. These projects have won more than 200 awards at national or provincial levels. All this has resulted in great social and economic benefits. In terms of scientific research, the rate of successful application for natural scientific funds is elevated each year in funds for the youths or funds for significant projects. The total amount of outlays adds up to nearly ten million yuan and there are over 200 projects that have both been finished and still underway.


The drilling of mainland, which is titled as “The First Drilling in Asia”, fully reflects the highest level of our country in this field. About 70 percent of the senior technicians at the location itself are graduates from the faculty. Some professors, one of whom being Professor Yang Kaihua also personally participated in the leadership of the project. In addition,  the faculty is also playing an active part in the major battlefields of national economic construction, trying to make full use of its advantages regarding techniques and skills. It has thus devoted a lot to the construction of some large projects such as the “Three Gorges Project”, “Xiao Langdi Project”, and others. There have been outstanding achievements in the reconnaissance, design, and fathering of geological disasters, thus  assuring the security of some highways and important establishments. At present, with the rapid development of reforms and opening up of our country, the exchanges and cooperation of the faculty with the outside world have also been expedited. Currently, it has already established favorable scientific and academic cooperation with countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia, Russia, the United Kingdom, Holland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway and some regions such as Hong Kong and Taiwan. Exchanges of visits between the faculty and these countries and regions have greatly boosted the academic reputation and influence of this faculty.


The Faculty of Engineering is a large faculty with excellent traditions and innovative spirits. It has been training highly qualified engineering and innovative professionals for several decades. The faculty always regards serving the engineering construction of our nation as its own task. Its goal is to build a “cradle” to train engineering professionals with a definite influence worldwide and top status nationally. With the support of the alumni both at home and abroad, and with the joint efforts of the staff, the Faculty of Engineering will keep pace with the times, make innovations with a pioneering spirit, and strive for even more glories through united and unyielding efforts.


Faculty of Material Science & Chemistry Engineering

In the Faculty of Material Science & Chemistry Engineering, 3 majors of Bachelor’s Degrees (Material Science and Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Material Chemistry) are set and there are 3 programs (Material Science, Analytical Chemistry and Applied Chemistry) authorized to grant Master’s Degrees. In addition, a Master’s and Doctor’s Degree can be conferred from the branch of Rock - Mineral New Material. There are altogether 106 staff members in this faculty. Among them there are 2 doctoral supervisors, 22 with Doctor’s Degrees, and 62 with either senior or junior professional titles. The faculty also includes 870 undergraduates and 70 pursuing their studies for Master’s and Doctor’s Degrees.


Major research branches set in the faculty are: New Types of Inorganic Nonmetal Material, Rock-mineral New Material, Compound Material, Functional Material, Analytical Chemistry, Fine Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Material Components, Nanoscale Materials and others. In recent years, the faculty has undertaken several projects that are at state level or at ministerial level, and 30 transverse cooperating projects. Among them, several have been granted ministerial level prizes, some are playing a leading role locally and some others have even reached an advanced international level.


The faculty now runs teaching and research institutions of Material Science and Engineering, Rock-Mineral New Material, Material Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Electrochemical Engineering and Basic Chemistry. The CUG New Material Research Institution and the CUG Food and Drug Research Institution are also two affiliated units of the faculty.


The Faculty of Material Science & Chemical Engineering owns a number of sophisticated instruments for the purpose of material preparation, measurement and testing. These advanced instruments include high temperature and thermal pressing oven, universal materials testing machine, ultra-fine airstreams mill, laser granularity tester, ICP-AES, AAS, AFS, double-wave-length and double-beam spectrophotometer and others.


Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics

The Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics is a key unit for the construction and development of the "211 Project" in CUG. In recent years, it has made extraordinary progresses in the construction of disciplines and laboratories, teaching staff, in the field of education, the quality of talent cultivation, scientific research and in international academic exchanges and cooperation. Thanks to the joint efforts of several generations, the Institute has gradually formed a discipline system with emphasis on environmental and engineering applied geophysics, applied geophysics of resources and energy resource exploration, marine and deep geophysics, mapping and cybernetics information techniques. Now, the Institute has several talented individuals and a teaching staff with abundant teaching and researching experiences. With key disciplines at provincial and ministerial levels and key laboratories equipped with advanced large-scale facilities, the Institute has already enjoyed a high reputation both at home and abroad, and has thus become the most significant base for talent cultivation, scientific research and technical services in the national geophysical fields. The SEG has also presented an article in its official publication, regarding the Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics of CUG as the talent educational center for “the electrical and electronical exploitation” in China.


Of the 59 staff members in the faculty, 1 is a member of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences), 13 are full professors (including 4 doctoral supervisors), and 24 are associate professors. Most young teachers have Doctor’s Degrees  and many have been sent abroad for visit and study purposes.


To make full use of its educational advantages and favorable foundation, on the basis of exploration and practice, the Institute has gradually formed a major discipline system combining courses of both engineering and sciences with engineering courses as the main ones. It now runs 3 programs (Applied Geophysics, Detection & Testing Technology and Apparatus, Information Science and Techniques of the Earth) to confer Bachelor’s Degrees, 3 programs for Master’s (Prospecting of the Earth and Information Techniques, Geophysics of Solid, Detection and Testing Technology and Automation), a doctoral program for Prospecting of the Earth and Information Techniques, and a post-doctoral working station of Geological Engineering. The current undergraduates total over 600, graduates over 200 (including Masters of engineering and students attending studies for master’s programs), and there are over 20 doctors.


Relying on the comprehensive advantages and high-qualified teaching staff, the Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics has obtained plentiful and substantial achievements in teaching research, scientific research and in the technical exploration fields. It has assumed more than 300 teaching and research projects successively supported by funds from national and local governments. Of those projects, 6 are teaching and research projects of …at…provincial and ministerial levels, 13 are funded by national natural science funds, and 13 are of state key projects, the “863 Plan”, and the “973 Plan”. In projects that have been completed, 15 have won prizes beyond the provincial and ministerial levels. Moreover, more than 400 theses have been published. A great number of current students have many times won credits in all kinds of national knowledge and skill competitions, having been awarded tens of 1st, 2nd and 3rd national prizes.


The Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics of today has already gained great importance both in and out of China and it has presented itself as a cradle for the cultivation of talents in the fields of applied geophysics, prospecting techniques and space information techniques
